Kow Your Locomotives
WCAM 3 upgraded dual-traction models deliver 4600hp in DC mode and 5000hp in AC mode, and were jointly developed by RDSO and BHEL in 1997. Components are shared with the WCAG-1 locos (see below). Co-Co fabricated bogies (High-Adhesion -- shared with WCAG-1, WAG-7, WDG-2, etc.) with secondary suspension. Monocoque underframe. Air brakes are original equipment. They were originally manufactured under a BOLT (build-own-lease-transfer) contract with BHEL, and are probably still owned by BHEL rather than by IR.

changers in AC mode and resistance notching in DC mode. Motors can be placed in different series-parallel combinations. Auxiliaries from Elgi, S F India, Best, Gresham & Craven, etc. Static converter from ACEC for auxiliary supply.
In DC mode, rheostatic braking by self-excitation of traction motors available
until 17km/h. Elgi compressor, other auxiliaries from S F India. Rated for 105km/h in both DC and AC mode (sometimes AC mod
e rated speed is quoted at 110km/h).

Traction motor configurations as in the
WCAM-1/2 and WAM-4 (all 6 in series, 2S 3P, or all parallel -- the latter is the only one used under AC traction, enforced now by modifications to the locos).
CR uses WCAM-3 locos on Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Igatpuri sections which have ghat portions as well as speed restrictions of about 100km/h. Freight rakes double-headed by WCAM-3 (upgraded models) have been sighted on the ghat sections. For excellent WCAM-3 sightings and regular double-header WDM-2 tanker trains, the Kurla-Vidyavihar section is ideal.
MU operation possible with 3 (4?) units.
Some WCAM-3 locos now [2004] are certified only for DC operation for various reasons, although it is possible they will be fixed and returned to full dual-traction service after repairs. As of [12/05], all WCAM-3 locos had been retrofitted with roof-mounted rheostatic braking grids.

are u sure that WCAM 3 is fit for speed of maximum of 110 Kmph??? if that's the case then WCAM 2 is Much better than WCAM 3 and a more better option for . WCAM 2 is tested for 135 Kmph and i have seen where this locos have pulled RDSO coaches with 145 kmph .
as far as i know the contracts for WCAM 2 /3 were signed together . first WCAM 2 were delivered to WR lys in 1995 to 1997 and WCAM 3 to CR.
anyway very soon

Yes WCAM 3 has max speed of 105 km/hr in both AC-DC traction, may go upto 110 km/hr for AC..
For WCAM 2/2P its 100km/hr for DC and 120 km/hr for AC traction..

Re# 883763-4
sorry your information is slightly wrong . WCAM 2 is for 120 Kmph but some were upgraded to go for a max speed of 135 kmph ,which was later clasified as WCAM 2P .both the classes are with CR now. to know what i am saying check this link click here . but the prob is CR ly is using these for locos for insignificant trains like sahyadi , jayanti
etc . instead they should use the locos for all intercity trains going to pune and nashik. CR needs to know to use its resources.

it won't make much of an difference as route mps is in range 0f 100-110, which anyways WCAM-3 can touch. Also, it is 4600 HP in DC, compared to around 3000 HP for WCAM-2, which will probably make it clear why CR still sticks with these locos for majority of intercity trains.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
