Mankara railway station to be shut.
Pathiripala: The Mankara railway station under the Palakkad Railway Division will go into history and functioning will be stopped by next March 31. The people of Mankara have been hearing this for a long time and now the Railways have decided to shut the station.
The people have protested and wanted the rail authorities to desist from their move to close down the Mankara station.
Besides...
more... being just another station, it is also one of the oldest railway stations of British Malabar and was constructed by the Viceroy for Mankara Chettoor Sir Shankaran Nair.
The Mankara station will be shut with the work on the signal panel and the relay room building, at a cost of Rs 3 crore, being completed. The present 4 station masters and 4 traffic staff will be transferred to other stations.
At present, only the Coimbatore-Mangalore and Shornur-Coimbatore Memu passengers express have stops at Mankara. Though these trains will continue to stop here at present, very soon this too would be stopped. Season ticket holders will be hard hit and the ticket counters too will be closed.
The station has been running into loss and the railway authorities say ticket collection for a day comes to only Rs 1500 and Rs 2000 from the station counters. The salary for the 8 employees comes to over Rs 4 lakh. During holidays, the monthly collection from issuing tickets comes to a meager RS 50000.
The first move to shut the station came up in 2012
