Some general observations from my recent travels by this train.
1) Has cut throat schedule between Chennai Central and Katpadi. Usually arrives 10 to 15 minutes late.
2) Arrives Calicut delayed by at least 15 minutes.
3) Beyond Calicut arrives at most stations on or before time.

Huge slack between Kasargod and Mangalore. Reached Ullal by 8.10 AM on 8th Feb. But the next few kms it was 40 minutes ride.
Can't this slack be removed so that train arrives at Mangalore before 8.30 AM and a connection can be formed with MAO Intercity by tweaking the time.
Having more slack time gives the S Rly to boost of ontime performance. But it also gives an excuse for regional leaders to demand more stops. In the last 1 - 2 years more stops were added.
This train is always occupied with season ticket holders in reserved compartment between Central and Katpadi, and between Kannur and Mangalore.
