Mangaluru, a prominent city in Karnataka, stands as an economic, educational, religious, and tourist nucleus within the state. Distinguished by its unique status, it boasts four modes of transportation—road, rail, air, and water—making it the sole city in Karnataka with such comprehensive connectivity. Home to pivotal railway stations including Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction, alongside others like Tokkottu and Ullal, the latter being somewhat distant from the city center, Mangaluru Central serves as the primary railhead. Remarkably, while positioned in Karnataka, it caters predominantly to trains bound for Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with a noticeable imbalance in favor of these states over local and Konkan routes. This incongruity parallels the rail dynamics observed in Bengaluru, where Karnataka-bound trains are prioritized at KSR Bengaluru City Junction while Kerala and Tamil Nadu connections operate from SMVT Bengaluru. To rectify this, Mangaluru should emulate this approach, directing Karnataka-bound trains from Mangaluru Central and delegating...

Kerala and Tamil Nadu routes to Ullal station, conveniently accessible by road. By fostering Ullal as a terminal station and relocating the goods depot to Panambur, and enhancing Bunder station, a harmonious redistribution of rail traffic could be achieved, elevating the significance of Karnataka and Konkan connections at Mangaluru Central.

If you are traveling light and want to save some money - here is a tip. Dont go for the prepaid or auto/taxis parked in front and the right side of the entrance. Instead walk straight out , take the stairs until you reach the main road. Now keep walking about 50 metres till you are away from the station and you will see a normal auto stand. Now take any taxi, auto to your destination with standard metre down fare. The railway parked autos never go by the metre and charge almost double.
