On 21 September 2021, Western Railways operated the first electric train from Pipavav Port of Bhavnagar Division, making it the country's first Indian Port connected with High Rise OHE.
In continuation with the Modi government’s prestigious mission of 100 per cent electrification of the Indian Railways network, the Western Railway zone has made another historical achievement. On 21 September 2021, Western Railways operated the first electric train from Pipavav Port of Bhavnagar Division, making it the country’s first Indian Port connected with High Rise OHE. According to Western Railways, with the flagging off this train, a new customer, i.e., Pipavav Rail Corporation Limited has been added as Container Operator. It further said the first rake was loaded from Pipavav Port siding to

Bhagat Ki Kothi in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Now, this port is directly connected with the Dedicated Freight Corridor with AC Traction of High Rise OHE.
The zonal railway further mentioned that this newly established connectivity will benefit in various aspects, such as elimination of undue detention on account of traction change, acceleration will be quicker, direct connectivity through AC Traction between Pipavav Port and Dedicated Freight Corridor as well as other major destinations. Also, this new initiative will help in minimizing cost of fuel, provide an eco-friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation. In the future, the move is also expected to help in increasing the average speed of freight train services and result in seamless train operations. According to Western Railways, the new connectivity with Pipavav Port is the beginning to a new era for the zone as well as the Indian Railways network towards an easy, smooth and quick transportation from ports in India.
With a goal of transforming the Indian Railways network into Green Railways by the year 2030, the national transporter has taken a slew of initiatives towards mitigation of global warming as well as combating climate change. Electrification of the rail network, improving energy efficiency of trains and locomotives as well as fixed installations, green certification for installations or railway stations, installing bio toilets, among others are parts of the national transporter’s strategy of achieving net zero carbon emission

INDIA: Regular operation of electrically-hauled double-stack container trains on the Indian Railways network began on June 10, with the start of electric haulage on the 270 km Palanpur – Botad section of the Western Railway.
IR began exploring the feasibility of running double-stack trains under overhead electrification in 2008, as part of its planning for the Dedicated Freight Corridors.
In order to allow the use of conventional flat wagons rather than well wagons, it was decided to look at raising the contact wire height. Two WAG-7 electric locomotives fitted with high-reach pantographs were

tested on the 35 km Jakhapura – Tumka section of the East Coast Railway which had been equipped with high-rise overhead line equipment.
Following the trials, IR settled on a contact wire height of 7 450 mm and a catenary height of 8 650 mm, with a tension of 10 kN as the standard for its DFC electrification. Wiring of the Western DFC is now underway, with electric operation on the Rewari – Madar section expected to begin shortly.
IR subsequently decided to install high-rise OLE on the 1 400 km conventional line between the key freight hub at Rewari southwest of the capital and the port of Pipavav in Gujurat, which is already being used by diesel-hauled double-stack trains. Around 70% of the wiring on this route has now been commissioned, with multiple installation teams at work as part of the national electrification campaign.
IR’s Executive Director, Railway Electrification, Bhupender Singh Bodh told Railway Gazette International that ‘all efforts are on to achieve through electric operation of double-stack trains from New Delhi to Pipavav by the third quarter of the current financial year’. This would see the work completed by the end of 2020. However, he reported that ‘progress has been severely affected by workforce constraints and supply chain issues’ as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The State Government on Monday told the Gujarat High Court it has so far constructed 81.06 kilometres of chain-link fencing on both sides of a railway line passing through lion habitat in Amreli district to prevent the big cats from being run over by trains.
In an affidavit submitted to the division bench of Justice SR Brahmbhatt and Justice AP Thaker, the State Government said it has taken a host of measures to curb unnatural deaths of Asiatic lions.
The Government said 260.7 km railway track from Pipavav port to Surendranagar passes through

lion habitat in Amreli district, adding that it had so far completed 81.06 chain-link fences on this route.
The High Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the State Government's disclosure in the assembly last year that 184 lions, lionesses and cubs died in 2016 and 2017, with 32 of them dying of "unnatural" causes.
The Gujarat High Court had sought explanations from the Centre and the State Government.
In its affidavit, the Government said it has so far constructed 37,201 parapets on open wells, including 703 in 2019-20, to prevent lions from falling into them.
Tough measures have been initiated against illegal lion shows also, and 40 cases were registered against 134 offenders since 2016, with four cases lodged this year alone, the State Government told the High Court.
