The India Cements plant at Chilamkur (near Yerraguntla in Andhra Pradesh) has started loading wet Fly Ash to their plant in Vishnupuram, near Miryalaguda in Telangana. This is the first time that Fly Ash is being loaded by Railways from this plant. Previously, the company used to transport the same through roadways. Fly Ash is an input used by the cement companies for manufacturing PCC (Portland Cement Concrete) cement. It is also an environment-friendly way of utilising fly ash.
The newly formed Business development Unit (BDU) of Guntakal Division has been making continuous efforts in expanding the railway freight basket of the division. The team has been holding regular meetings to make the freight customers aware of the benefits of transporting by

Railways. The customers are also being briefed about the regular Policy initiatives being taken at the Board level for their benefit.
In this direction, in August 2020, the Railway Board has introduced a policy rebate of 40% concession on the Normal Tariff Rates (NTR), for freight customers who load Fly Ash either in bagged or in loose/bulk condition through open wagons. The BDU of Guntakal division acted accordingly in making the freight customers aware of the benefits by transporting their material by railways.
Now, these continuous efforts have resulted in the loading of the First Fly-Ash rake availing tariff rebate under the policy concessions through Railways from this plant. Apart from being beneficial to the customers in terms of freight concession and also generating additional revenue and loading to the Railways, transportation by the railways is also an environment-friendly way of transporting Fly-Ash.
Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manger, SCR complimented the team of Officers and Staff of Guntakal Division for initiating this new stream of traffic for the Railways. He advised all the other Zonal and Divisional BDUs to continue their efforts towards taping new areas of freight business for the Railways. He advised the teams to particularly make the freight customers aware of how loading by Railways is not economically beneficial to them, but also beneficial in terms of safety, speed and being environment-friendly.

South Central Railway (SCR)’s Nandyal – Yerraguntla section in Guntakal Division became the first ‘solar section’ where all the stations on the section have been provided with solar panels at a stretch to tap the renewable energy.
It is a relatively new line for the Indian Railways and has been opened for passenger traffic in 2016 only to bring the hinterland areas into rail map by providing rail connectivity to Yerraguntla on Guntakal-Renigunta main-line with Nandyal on Dhone-Guntur main-line.
While solar panels have been installed at the stations, service buildings, level crossing

gates etc., across the zone, the concept of all stations of a particular section being provided with solar panels at one stretch to tap the natural energy is a first such initiative. Besides, meeting power needs of all the stations in the section but also save expenditure for the Railways, said Chief Public Relations Officer Ch. Rakesh.
All the eight stations in the section — Madduru, Banaganapalle, Koilakuntla, Sanjamala, Nossam, S. Uppalapadu, Jammalamadugu and Proddutur —have been provided with solar panels capable of meeting the power needs at these railway stations.
About 148 KWh energy units can be generated throughout the year resulting in generation of 54,020 power units. The expected savings in terms of revenue is around ₹5 lakh per annum and carbon footprint reduction of 49 metric tonnes per annum as contribution towards green environs.
To make use of solar power, 37 kWp off grid roof top solar plants along with 250/125 Wp solar panels were installed in each station. In addition, inverters and 12V 150 AH battery banks were also installed at all these stations. In total the connected load on solar plants is on an average 30 kWp and 152 solar panels were installed with an an average exploring of eight sunny hours per day.
General Manager Gajanan Mallya patted the efforts of the Guntakal division to overcome the power fluctuations and problems by tapping natural energy resource. “They also have given us a better solution to the power needs of the entire section,” he added.

This is a good initiative. Some express trains should also be diverted through this route as will reduce travel time to Kadapa and Tirupati. This line should also be electrified ASAP

The Railways will roll out its new signalling system from April 2020 onwards that is expected to make train travel faster and safer, a senior railways official said.
The implementation will begin with four sections of about 640 route kilometres with an estimated cost of around ₹1,810 crore.
This is expected to be a pilot project for pan-India implementation of the nearly ₹78,000 crore project to modernise the signalling system which was included in the works programme of 2018-19.
"We

are yet to get approval for this [entire project] from the NITI Aayog, the extended Railway Board and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA),” Pradeep Kumar, Member (Signal & Telecom), Railway Board said. The four sections where the plan will be implemented first are Renigunta -Yerraguntla section of the South Central Railways, Vizianagaram-Palasa section of East Coast Railway, Jhasi-Bina on North Central Railway and Nagpur-Badnera on Central Railway.
"These four sections are some of the busiest routes on Indian Railways with heavy traffic. These will act as a pilot for signal modernisation across the 70,000 km network of the Indian Railways,” Mr. Kumar said.
The modernisation of the signalling system will include implementation of technologies such as the automatic train protection (ATP) system that helps in adhering to permissible speed limits without driver intervention and 4G-based mobile train radio communication system (MTRC) which will can be used for emergency communications.
The implementation of these new systems will improve safety, reduce congestion, increase line capacity and improve punctuality, Mr. Kumar said.

According to Railway Ministry, the project of modern train control system will be implemented on the 165 route km on the Renigunta-Yerraguntla section of the South Central Railway, 145 route km on the Vizianagaram-Palasa section of the East Coast Railway, 155 route km on the Jhansi-Bina section of the North Central Railway and 175 km route on the Nagpur-Badnera Section of the Central Railway....

These are some of the busiest routes on the Indian Railway with heavy traffic, it said. "Automatic Train Protection System and LTE based MRTC will improve safety, help reduce congestion in these rail networks and increase line capacity and improve punctuality. It will also help to increase average speed of trains," it said. The modern train control system shall be as per open standard, and interoperable with multi-vendor support. The MTRC system shall be deployed using LTE backbone for communication between train running staff, drivers, guards and control office. "This system will also be used for working of the Automatic Train Protection System. Initially, this system will be provided on 500 locomotives," it said. The Railways said that the pilot project at estimated cost of Rs 1,609 crore is to be completed in 24 months. The modern train control system, based on LTE based MTRC, is one of the most ambitious modernization projects of Indian Railways, which envisages upgradation of signalling system at par with the world standards.
