HYDERABAD: A slightly modified plan for the second phase of Multi-Modal Transit System (MMTS) seeking to connect Patancheru with the city on one side and Ghatkesar on the other, has been accepted by the State Government.
The lines that have been cleared towards strengthening the MMTS services include Secunderabad-Medchal (28 km), Falaknuma-International Airport, Shamshabad (20 km) and Secunderabad-Ghatkesar (19 km).
It has also been decided to revive the 8-km abandoned line between Tellapur, further down Lingampally, and Patancheru. This would mean extension of the MMTS services up to Patancheru.

of lines
It was also decided to strengthen the line between Moulali and Sanathnagar and also the one connecting Kachiguda with Moulali. Apart from MMTS services, these two lines would help in decongestion of the Secunderabad station by allowing diversion of goods trains.
Once the bypass of Kachiguda-Moulali and Sanathnagar-Moulali are strengthened, goods services running from Vijayawada, Delhi and Kolkata to Mumbai will be diverted on these routes and avoid having to enter the Secunderabad yard, says N.V.S.Reddy, MMTS Project Director.
The revival of Tellapur-Patancheru tracks would mean extending the service to one of the busiest city outskirts on tracks that have been lying idle for a long time after the railways abandoned a failed sub-urban service to Patancheru.
Budget-sharing
On the Secunderabad-Ghatkesar route, there are two lines at present and the proposal envisages adding a third line for the MMTS service.
This new proposed networking of MMTS would comprise six lines at an estimated cost of Rs. 325 crores. The budget would be split between the State Government and the Railways with the former contributing Rs. 217 crores.
Mr.Reddy said the MMTS trains have started drawing more commuters in the last few months with the number of users going up by almost 1,000 each month. "On an average, about 34,000 commuters are using the service every day," he said. A review of the service was done at a meeting in which the South Central Railways General Manager, D.N.Mathur, also took part on Thursday. The proposal on the second phase which received the approval of the Chief Minister, Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy would now be sent to the Railway Board, Mr.Reddy said.
