HYDERABAD: Littering in and around railway stations is continuing unrestrained despite stringent rules put in place almost a year ago.
Passengers using railway stations in the Secunderabad-Bolarum section seem to be the worst affected, with station premises and approach roads becoming sites for dumping garbage and a haven for miscreants.
"The approach road to the Malkajigiri station has become a dumping ground and is teeming with miscreants in the evening. Smaller stations where MMTS connectivity is absent are even worse than other stations," said Noor Ahmed Ali, general secretary of Suburban Train and

Bus Traveller's Association (STBTA). He said that the section's other stations like Amugudda, Lalaguda and Dayanand Nagar are worse. "Despite representations made to railway officials, we have got no respite," he alleged. S Ravi of MMTS traveller's group said that the issue of lack of cleanliness at railway stations was raised last month by passenger organizations during a meeting with the parliamentary standing committee on railways.
Littering, however, has been brought under control at bigger stations where passenger footfalls are higher, claim officials. SCR collected Rs 94 lakh as fine from 46,000 people in its six divisions. In the city, Secunderabad division and the station area saw the maximum number of cases.
However, this does not mean an end to the menace. It is a common sight to see people littering the tracks and platforms or dogs defecating even at big stations like Secunderabad.
