Unless Podanur to Madurai comes under Madurai division, no useful trains can be expected in this route. Each division will fight and public will travel by buses.

Podanur Pollachi 45 kms line falls in 3 divisions of SR (Podanur in Salem divn, Kinathukadavu to Pollachi in PGT Divn and beyond Pollachi in Madurai divn). So, one cannot expect any good train in CBE MDU line.
True, until now no good service wither way via CBE,-Pollachi or PGT-Pollachi.
Earlier MG lines had more trains than today. Morning Madurai ICE and passenger from CBE and PGT. Evening/ night, we had PGT RMM passenger and CBE RMM express. There were connecting trains to PGT/CBE trains from CBE/ PGT for a seamless travel at Pollachi. Now hardly any train!!
