CHENNAI: The busy stretch of Poonamallee High Road outside the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Central Railway Station caved in on the early hours of Monday causing severe traffic jams and vehicle diversions. The stretch which caved in was already covered by steel set as Chennai Metro Rail was constructing a subway underneath which connects the Central Station and Central Metro. CMRL officials said that incident happened at mid-night 1 am on Monday when a heavy-loaded goods container truck moved from Chennai port trust towards Central station. "The truck was supposed to weight only 49 ton but it was loaded with 90 ton weight. As a result, the front part of the truck crossed the stretch while the loaded back-part caused the cave in," an... more...
official said. The official added that luckily none of the workers were present at that time in the subway and immediately after the incident came to light, the truck was removed. Officials said that the police have booked the truck driver for carrying weight in the truck above permitted levels. CMRL officials said that work to restore the cave in was happening in a fast-paced manner and traffic would be restored by 2 pm. Meanwhile, the traffic police have booked the truck driver under IPC sections pertaining to negligent driving and overloading under Motor Vehicle Act. The driver was booked and released on station bail. The truck was carrying over 90 tonnes of iron sheets to a private factory. Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Dr N Kannan said that the truck was coming from Port Trust towards Poonamallee. Usually the trucks carrying heavy load are to require special permission to ply on city. This truck did not get any permission. "The confusion happened because the trucks usually unload at Port and return empty when they cross Central Railway station. But this truck had loaded up when entering the city," he said. Had they got prior permission the traffic police would have suggested a different route. Since the truck was covered the police on duty thought it was an empty one, said the senior police officer. After the truck caved inside the road the fire and rescue personnel were informed and the truck was pulled out. "The reconstruction work should be over by evening. We have diverted the traffic for today. We have also requested the contractors to install stronger rods to bear heavy load," said Kannan adding that the traffic will resume around Central Railway station by evening.
BENGALURU: While Indian Railways plans to complete electrification of all lines in the country by 2023, only 731km (20%) of the 3,566km track network in South Western Railway has been electrified so far.
This means SWR will have to electrify 2,835km in the next three years. Complete electrification is likely to push up speed of trains by 10-15% and provide seamless operations by eliminating detention of trains due to change in traction from diesel to electric and vice-versa. It will also reduce dependence on petroleum-based fuels. Railway... more...
minister Piyush Goyal recently said in the Lok Sabha: "Total broad gauge route in Indian railways is 63,631km. Of this, 39,866km has been electrified as on April 2020." During the session, he said they are planning to undertake electrification of 6,000km each in 2020-21 and 2021-22, 6,500km in 2022-23 and 5,265km in 2023-24.
SWR sources said electrification work is likely to be completed only by 2025. "Work is progressing fast but it is difficult to meet the 2023 deadline because of various factors like Covid-19," said a source. Asked about SWR's poor record of electrification, he said: "Earlier, the railways was giving priority to routes that witnessed high freight movement. It's also difficult to take up work in the Ghat section."
SWR has electrified routes like Bengaluru-Mysuru, Bengaluru-Jolarpettai, Yelahanka-Dharmavaram, Ballari-Kariganur and Toranagallu-Ranjitpura. While it has commissioned electrification of Byappanahalli-Anekal, commissioner of rail safety (CRS) will inspect the remaining Anekal-Hosur section soon. "This year, we are planning to commission electrification of sections like Yelahanka-Devanahalli (23km),Chikkabanavara-Banasandra (105km), Hotgi-Kalgurki (128km), Ghataprabha-Kudachi (47km), Hubballi-Londa (90km), Kariganur-Hulkoti (102km), Kariganur-Harlapur (71km), Talaku-Chitradurga (50km) and Periyanagathunai-Palakkodu (50km)," said E Vijaya, chief public relations Officer, SWR. Central Organisation for Railway Electrification, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, Indian Railway Construction Organisation, Rail India Technical and Economic Services Limited and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited are taking up electrification projects. Rail activists have been demanding electrification of routes in Karnataka be expedited. The project will also help SWR replace DEMU with MEMU, which will mainly help suburban passengers. Of the 23,765km yet to be electrified across the country, Northeast Frontier Railway has to undertake work on 3,793km and North Western Railway on 3,282km. SWR fares the third worst in rail electrification. In contrast, East Coast Railway, headquartered in Bhubaneswar, has completed electrification of its entire 3,853km network.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, time of preparation of the second reservation chart was shifted to two hours before the scheduled time of train departure. The first chart is prepared at least four hours before the scheduled departure of the train. “As per request of Zonal Railways for ensuring convenience of rail passengers, the matter has been examined and it has been decided that the second reservation chart shall be prepared at least 30 minutes before scheduled/rescheduled time of departure of train,” a statement issued by the Indian Railways said. “Accordingly, ticket booking facility, both online and on PRS ticket counters, shall be available, before preparation of second chart. CRIS will make necessary modifications in the software accordingly so as to restore this provision with effect from October 10,” it added. All passenger trains services were suspended due to the imposition of the nationwide lockdown from March 25, but the railways has resumed services in a staggered manner from May 1. Recently, zones got approval for 39 new special trains. “These services will be introduced as special services from an early convenient date,” said the Ministry of Railways.
This announcement was made a week after railway board chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav said that Indian Railways plans to run more than 200 trains during the festive season between October 15 and November 30.
