There's nothing more fun than taking a train that runs across international borders.
One of the best modes of transport are the trains. They not only make your journeys fun by giving you ample time to look out at the natural beauty of the countryside passing you by but also enough time to read, write and catch up on old movies. While there are tons of domestic train rides for the intrepid traveller, here are some of the international ones you can explore.
Samjhauta Express
Express runs twice a week between New Delhi and Atari in India, and Lahore in Pakistan. When it first started in 1976, it used to be a daily running train before it turned into a bi-weekly train in 1994. You can only purchase the ticket for this train at the Atari Junction in Amritsar if you have a valid Pakistan visa. The train journey covers a distance of 27 kilometres in around 4 hours. The train only stops at Wagha Station in Punjab.
Thar Link Express
Operated on a weekly basis by the Indian Railways Network, this international passenger train runs between Bhagat Ki Kothi Station in Jodhpur and Munabao Junction in Pakistan. The train doesn’t halt at any station; it runs at a speed of 54km/ hour, covering 325 kilometres in 6 hours. The train comprises of 9 coaches including sleeper class and SRLs.
Maitree Express
Started in 2008, Maitree Express runs between Kolkata in India and Dhaka in Bangladesh six days a week. It covers a distance of 375 kilometres in less than 9 hours. Tickets are available at the Kolkata Railway Station, provided you have a valid and authorised Bangladesh visa. The train crosses two major rivers: Padma river over the 100-year-old Hardinge Bridge and Jamuna river over the Bangabandhu Bridge.
Bandhan Express
Launched in 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bandhan express runs between Kolkata in India and Khulna in Bangladesh every week. It’s a fully air-conditioned train with red-grey and sky-blue colour coaches. However, a valid visa is necessary to board the train. The government has decided to make a 3-minute halt at Jessore to have more passengers on the train.

Train services were delayed here on Wednesday morning after railway tracks got submerged in water. Efforts of railway employees to clear the water went in vain due to heavy rain.
Water from Jakkina Honda is overflowing on to the tracks and every train passing over the tracks must wait for water to be cleared. This has delayed trains by 15 to 60 minutes. Rainwater also entered the railway police station in the premises of the railway station destroying several documents.
Half of Gokak submerged
situation at Gokak worsened on Wednesday after more than one lakh cusecs of water was released from Hidkal Dam. Almost half the town is under water. Water even gushed into the NSF office of Arabhavi MLA Balachandra Jarkiholi. Disqualified MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi rushed to the town on Wednesday and visited flood-hit areas. Rescue teams rescued over 50 patients from Nimra Hospital using boats.
Meanwhile in Belagavi, several areas have turned in to lakes. More than five to six feet of water is standing in the areas like Maratha Colony, Shivaji Colony, Swami Vivekananda Colony, Shanti Nager, Godasewadi, Gajanan Maharaj Nagar and Indraprastha Nagar in Tilakwadi.
The administration is rescuing people and shifting them to safer places. BJP workers under the leadership of MLA Abhay Patil were engaged in rescue operations. Belagavi North MLA Anil Benake and rural MLA Laxmi Hebbalkar along with their respective party workers were helping out affected people.
The police department has attached posters at the railway station and many other areas informing the public that all routes from Belagavi towards Goa and Maharashtra have been closed. The Pune-Bengaluru National Highway-4 and Belagavi- Panjim National Highway- 4A were closed on Monday night due to submersion and landslides, respectively.
Holiday extended
Deputy commissioner S B Bommanahalli has extended the holiday announced for schools and colleges by three more days to Saturday.
Meanwhile schools in Bagalkot district will remain closed until Friday.

Train passengers on a visit to Bengaluru can now easily find accommodation anywhere within the city thanks to the newly entered partnership between the Railways and the hotel chain, Oyo Rooms. The attractive red kiosks of the popular budget group have sprung up at the entrance of six railway stations within the Bengaluru Railway Division in the last fortnight.
The service has been launched at Bengaluru Cantonment, Kengeri, Yeshwantpur, Krishnarajapuram and Yelahanka railway stations. Whitefield railway station is set to join the list soon.
The present contract between the Bengaluru Railway Division and
the concern Oravel Stays Private Ltd is for one year. Passengers stand to benefit due to the ease in finding accommodation while Railways stands to get an attractive income through this move.
An OYO staffer at Yesvantpur felt the business has been good so far. “We opened our kiosk on July 17. I help passengers book the online accommodation through my tablet. Though no publicity has been given, we have started getting four or five bookings each day. It is bound to go up in the coming days,” he said.Speaking to TNIE, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Bengaluru Division, N R Sridharamurthy said, “This initiative has been undertaken as part of our non-fare revenue generating sources. The Bengaluru Division stands to get a fixed revenue of Rs 16,66,000 from all the stations collectively as the annual licence fee. It is very beneficial to passengers too as they can just arrive in Bengaluru without any accommodation worries.”
Mysuru railway station already has an OYO kiosk while none of the stations falling under Hubballi Division have them yet.  As per the contract, one kiosk measuring 25 sq ft needs to be put up by the licencee. “The kiosks should not cause inconvenience to the public or to Railway officials. It should not hamper free movement of passengers on the circulating area,” it states.
Urban Transportation expert Sanjeev Dyammanavar welcomed the move. “It will make the trip of a passenger to the city very comfortable. Those who do not have Internet facility on their phones or do not have access to Internet banking need not feel left out and can now avail of cheaper offers found online through these kiosk staff,” he said. In a station like Yesvantpur where one can also book Oyo cabs offline, it will help if Railways can club both these features so that it is offered like a package to the passenger, he said.
