It can generate electricity while decelerating
The Palakkad Railway Division will soon get the most advanced three-phase Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains. The three-phase MEMU will replace the conventional single-phase DC MEMU services.
Divisional Railway Manager Pratap Singh Shami said that three new three-phase MEMU rakes would join the Palakkad fleet soon. They will replace the existing rakes plying between Palakkad and Erode, Shoranur and Salem, and Palakkad and Eranakulam. Each rake will have two motor cars and six trailer cars. “The three-phase MEMU will have many passenger features, apart from generating
electricity while decelerating. This is a unique feature of this advanced rake,” Mr. Shami said.
Faster and more efficient
The three-phase MEMU rake uses AC propulsion system consisting of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). It can run faster than the conventional MEMU and the braking system has been made more efficient.
Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer S. Jayakrishnan said that it was made at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and would use energy-efficient electric traction propulsion system. The regenerative braking system can save up to 35% energy, he said. Mr. Shami said the electricity generated during deceleration would be fed into the grid. “Apart from being energy-efficient, the three-phase MEMU requires less maintenance as well,” he said.
The rake will have stainless-steel body coaches with light sliding doors and polymer interior panels. It will be fitted with surveillance cameras, LED lights, LED indication for chain-pulling, and GPS-based passenger information system. The seats are better designed.
S“The air bellows for secondary suspension will give better riding comfort for passengers,” said Mr. Jayakrishnan. It will have increased carriage capacity. As many as 2,402 people can travel in a rake. The cabins of motormen and guard are air-conditioned.
