I’d been invited aboard the British Pullman train by Orient Express at Victoria station in London. The trains carriages are described as “palaces on wheels” and are not only beautifully restored but also boast a wealth of history. Overall it makes for a fascinating, luxurious and also unique journey. From boarding the train at Victoria Station it really did feel like we were stepping back in time.We were greeted by friendly and smartly dressed train staff on boarding the train and shown to our carriage. The carriage décor consisted of art nouveau lamps, polished brass, velvet armchairs, veneered panels and mahogany fittings making us feel like we were on the set of a historic film. This was only accentuated when the British Pullman pulled up along side a standard London commuter train.Looking out of our window it felt like another world, as we rolled into stations I expected old fashioned conductors stood...

It sounds cliched but the British Pullman experience really does transport you to another world to one where train travel was a prestigious way to travel. Our carriage, Gwen had been part of the famous Brighton Belle and was built in 1932. It came to fame when it was used by HM Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) on a journey to Brighton in 1948. The carriage has been beautifully restored and features arm chairs with covers restored using the same pattern and material as the original carriage.I found the history behind the train fascinating and it really was a pleasure to experience something with a rich history and a bright future. On board we were treated to a five course meal with superb service and attention to detail. For example I accidentally used the dessert spoon with my soup, without even mentioning this it was taken away an exchanged for a clean one. Champagne and fine wines were on offer throughout and our carriage proved a perfect place converse and while away the seemingly short 4 hour journey. The whole journey was such a contrast to what we expect from train travel today that it was difficult to leave at the end of the journey. I’m pleased that Orient Express are preserving the history and heritage of the British Pullman whilst proving a unique and luxurious experience for their customers.
