News Entry# 38963  The Shinkansen Bullet Train

For travelers from Japan, intended to cover any distance, trains are the best way to get around. And nothing is faster than the famous bullet train. If you purchase tickets for travel in place, these trips Shinkansen can cost about the same as the equivalent rate – but the variety of destinations is not confined only to cities that have airports. Shinkansen simply means “New Trunk Line” in English, but is more commonly known as the bullet train. The convenience factor other Japanese bullet train is probably not immediately apparent. For example, imagine taking a plane. I’d need to get yourself right out of town to the airport, check in early, go through the examination and boarding procedures and then do it all again at the other end! I could add many hours for a trip that may involve only one or two hours of flight. With Shinkansen bullet trains, assuming you...

have a seat without reservations, all you need do is give back to the station, wait 15 to 20 minutes for the next train and jump aboard. The Shinkansen schedule is very regular, but I recommend taking a Shinkansen calendar as the services are stopped during the night. That way you do not get caught out. Keep your luggage aside and relax! There’s even food and beverage carts that are wheeled through the train as in the air! You can buy snacks, hot meals and alcohol, even, and the seats also fold down trays. When you reach your destination, simply grab your bags and fire. Most of the Shinkansen bullet trains run fairly central stations in cities that are easily accessible. You will find that your trip is much nicer Japanese train, and you can enjoy the view as well, albeit at a fairly high speed. If you plan to travel by train a lot in Japan, a Japan Rail Pass is definitely recommended and allows unlimited travel on JR (Japan Rail) trains of 7, 14 or 21 days depending on card purchased. But be careful, as many companies train other than Japan Rail and the Japan Rail Pass is valid for all train services. Is the JR pass a package saves you all, especially since it can have unlimited travel on Shinkansen bullet train use. Passes can be purchased only outside Japan, so check with your local Japanese travel (JTB) availability. Cost may also vary due to exchange rate and the pass price is in Japanese yen. Again, the JTB office informed of current prices. The Japan Rail Pass allows you to use all Shinkansen services, apart from the Nozomi class who are the current bullet trains faster. Since usually the Shinkansen Nozomi will be a complete express service to your destination, you’re probably going to want to take the Shinkansen services anyway to lose along the way to enjoy your stay in Japan. A trip on the bullet train is a must-do for the whole Japan experience!
