Passengers of Indian Railways and even common people can now avail of modern resting facilities at comparatively cheaper rates thanks to the first-of-its-kind pod hotel that has come up at the Mumbai Central station.

Rs 999 for 12 hours

to a senior Western Railway (WR) official, one has to pay Rs 999 for 12 hours and Rs 1,999 for 24 hours for staying in this pod hotel where facilities like WiFi, TV, a small locker, adjustable mirror, and reading lights, among others, will be provided.

What is a pod hotel?

A pod hotel has several small bed-sized capsules and provides affordable overnight accommodation. The first pod hotel on the Indian Railways was inaugurated virtually on Wednesday by Union minister of state for Railways Raosaheb Danve from the Churchgate station in south Mumbai. The minister also inaugurated various passenger amenities via video link.

Affordability factor

Speaking at the event, Danve said passengers will get the accommodation at affordable rates at the pod hotel, also known as capsule hotels. The minister said that many passengers coming from other states to Mumbai either return the same day or stay overnight. However, for many of them the hotels and lodging facilities in the city are unaffordable.

'Restaurant on Wheels'

According to him, the Railways also provided a facility of 'Restaurant on Wheels' at CSMT for providing better dining facilities at the railway station, as a part of the efforts to provide better facilities to passengers without any hike in the ticket fare.Danve said there is a plan to set up more such 'restaurants on wheels' at stations like Nagpur, Manmad and Pune.

Railways is planning to boost passenger convenience and its revenue. Travel in AC local trains in Mumbai is proposed to be on the lines of metro, like DMRC, Mumbai metro. Now that'll be the base fare for ordinary class.

With 100% electrification, 100% HOG will follow. It will take some years, but will happen. With that, railways will have power to run fully AC trains -- both M/E and passengers (MEMU included) with full AC rakes. In future all services of IR can become AC only. And we may see hawkers and
beggars in A3E, A3, A2 and A1 along with unnamed AD/AG. I personally find this great since IR has been allowing over a million serving staff (and their dependents) to travel and eat free in AC class. This includes retired railway employees with their dependents and dead railway employees' dependents and care givers. We as honest travelers and tax payers are paying for this largesse.

This will allow IR to raise fares. And that will happen in stages as and when a route gets full AC rake.

The process has begun. All new local (EMU) rakes coming to Mumbai will be AC. By next 2 decades, all trains will be AC. Rest coaches being converted to carry goods!

Finally. the greatest news to upgrade the cheapest travel in the whole world.

Nov 10 (13:28)   Railways may reduce AC local train fares

In a bid to increase the ridership of air-conditioned (AC) local trains on the Central and the Western Railway lines, the railway ministry is likely to undertake a reduction in fare prices and introduce more amenities soon.

Reduction in fare of the AC local trains along with steps to ‘popularise’ them and restructuring of their routes are some of the measures that are being studied by the Railway Board, the apex body of all zonal railways.

The fare structure of the suburban AC local trains will be based on metro fare structure finalised by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) or the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Earlier, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) had suggested the fare structure of AC local trains on par with metro fares in Mumbai and Delhi.

Chairman of the Railway Board Suneet Sharma who visited the Central and Western Railways on Monday stated that the feedback regarding AC local trains has been received from the zonal railway officials and passengers.

“We want to increase the patronage of the AC local trains as the new trains will be coming in both Central and Western Railway lines. The logistics regarding fare structure and routes are being studied and decisions will be taken accordingly,” said Sharma.

Further, the railway ministry has plans to convert all local train services to AC local trains in the future.

Meanwhile, Sharma inaugurated a locomotive for the Kalka- Shimla railway track at Parel and also inspected the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), its executive lounge and the newly inaugurated restaurant on wheels at the P’D Mello entrance of the station.

That's the point. Mumbai suburban has a FC. So suburban AC was priced higher.

Suburban FC has cushions. Hence at least 4 times ticket rates. AC was priced higher. They probably thought of competing with CABs.

Metros coming in, railways might do away from FC and keep just 2 classes -- AC and NON-AC.

My last read in this regard was that MRVC placing orders for about 283 (10 % variance) AC rakes (12 coaches) with IR (mostly ICF) for deliveries beginning 2024. That could be hastened (?) Political --- stop.

I believe this is a good start. As new AC rakes arrive, MRVC should stop leakages, something like Metros (no leakages -- no W/t pax)

Mumbai Suburban are the fastest mode of transport. And they are cheapest. They can't be beaten by Metro.

Mumbai suburban goes up to 125 km in 4 different routes, where metro is well within the halfway mark. Metro will be confined to MMRDA limits and even less.

So it may not be exactly possible to convert all trains to AC in long term, too. No one from DRD or KSRA will pay metro fare for local AC travel. But it will certainly prevent local vendors selling headphones, popcorn and other items inside AC locals.

While FC gave local passengers an elite feel, AC locals can't. But at metro fares, AC locals will make local FC redundant.

AC local trains are smart, and the software can upgrade them to be smarter. Train frequency could be increased, and leakages could be reduced, like no w/t travel for AC local. Like metro, AC local tickets could be smart (QR based).

Smart days are ahead for Mumbai local train commuters! with the only blip that it will begin to happen in next year. Fare committee for AC local fare is still deliberating (?) and may do so for some more weeks.

Anyways, metro will be offering different halts except interchange points. 2 new routes are expected to begin ops within this FY. Now that is expected to ease journey between Dahisar and Andheri. WR would seriously be inspecting its impact on AC/FC local passenger volume. Fingers crossed.
