You are saying from your understanding. First thing, those travelling in GS are real Poor's, not SL. this is true specially for long distance trains. Those travelling in SL were same who were paying 10k, 20k around 2 yrs ago and GS travellers were on foot. I am not against SL. But truth is fare can't be increased, so SL is reduced. You will also agree that SL fares are unsustainable. Sarkari naukari aur sasta Safar dono chahiye logo ko, ye to nhi ho skta.

Fare badhane IRI par kehna achha lagta hai aur ye demand koi road par nhi krega. Lekin wahi SL fare almost 17-18 yrs se nhi badha. Agar fare ko 500 se 600 kr de to hungama ho jayega. Road par virodh pradarshan chalu. Sach ye hai ki railway earns more in general coaches(upto 300% occupancy) than SL(100%) at current fare. My understanding is railway will bring more AC, more unreserved and AC unreserved (if introduced). It will put sleeper coaches at back burners. Jab sleeper kaafi Kam ho jayega tab fare badhayega uska. This may be long term strategy.
