#HistoricalRail
Recently I have gone through a very good document on some of our country’s small railways. Some of them are extinct, some are still operational, some have been converted. Thought it’s my duty to share the knowledge among my fellow Railfans. It’s not possible to discuss the whole book at a time. So I’ll explore it part by part.
Today I will inform you about a historical railway which is even about to be wiped out from people’s memory. This railway used to operate at North Bengal. The “Teesta Valley Railway”

or “Teesta Valley Extension”. It’s called ‘Extension’ as it was operated as a branch line of the famous “Darjeeling Himalayan Railway” with an aim to connect Kalimpong with the plains. However, due to technical difficulty it couldn’t be extended beyond Teesta Bazaar. This branch was opened in 1915 and terminated in 1951, with only 36yrs. Of lifespan.
The track started from today’s ‘Siliguri Town’ station. All the stations enroute are:
1) Siliguri Town (Source)
2) Siliguri Road Jn. (Now ‘SGUJ’)
3) Sivok Forrest Sidings
4) Sivok
5) 13.5 Miles
6) Kalijhora
7) Rilly Sidings
8) Ryiang (Station for Mangpu Hills)
9) Giellekhola/Kalimpang Road (Station Code: GEKA)
This ‘Giellekhola’ used to exist around 3KMs away from today’s Teesta Bazaar. Total distance of the route was closed to 50KMs. As per my understanding the route could have been looked like the one shown in the Red Line with stations as blue dots in the attached map (drawn by myself- may not be 100% accurate but more or less).
It was light gauge (2Ft.) like the Darjeeling Railway.
Will come back with more histories, descriptions and acknowledgements soon in the next part.

#HistoricalRail Part2 (Teesta Valley Railway- Continued)
As I said earlier this is called 'Extension' as it used to be branch line of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway to connect Kalimpong.
I have also mentioned that this line couldn't be extended upto proper Kalimpong due to technical barrier and was terminated at Geillekhola near Teesta Bazaar, which is approx. 18KMs from Kalimpong by road.

route opened in 1915 (I cordially thank Mr. Joydeep Roy for sharing valuable information with us) and washed away by the deluge' of river Teesta in 1950. It was officially closed in 1951. Total cost of the construction was then Rs 4300000/- (including the cost for the Siliguri Town-Kishangunj Railway).
This route was mainly used for the freight activities. However, only one Passenger Train used to run in the whole day. That train used to depart from Siliguri Town in the morning as a connector to the 'Darjeeling Mail' (Yes, Darjeeling mail- 1UP/2DOWN used to run via present Bangladesh on those days and terminate at Siliguri Town instead of NJP. NJP was opened in 1961, much younger one I say). The same train used to start from GEKA in the evening and terminated at Siliguri before Darjeeling used to start her return journey.
The freight trains used to carry various goods common to Himalayas line Orange, Wool, Butter, Wood etc. A large part of the track used to cut through the dense jungle of Terrai. Many sights of the ferocious wild animals like Tigers, Elephants, Wild Bears etc. have been reported.
So this was the more or less history of this route. Today we can't even see a trace of this route, it now only stays in some documents and in some people's memory.
Notable Incidents or accidents: No report found except the 1950 flood
Famous Passengers: 1) Sri Rabindranath Tegore
2) Maitreyi Devi (Famous author, some say that the famous Bollywood movie 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' was based on her novel 'Na Hanyate'/'It Does Not Die'.
Appearance in other Media: 'Bhool Satya' (Wrong Truth) novel by famous Bengali writer Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay.

2) Pics: a) Map drawn by myself on the Google Map platform (later modified by Mr. Joydeep Roy)

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
