West Bengal.
The adult elephant was struck by a train in a forest at the Buxa Tiger Reserve, a few miles from Alipurduar in north east India.
A speeding passenger train, the Guwahati-bound Somporkkranti Express, hit the elephant while he was crossing the railway line. He died instantly.
Hecan species, only male Asian
elephants have tusks, m the elephant who died
here was an adult male
The tiger reserve where the
elephant was killed is inside the
Buxa National Park, which runs along
India's boundary with Bhutan.
This means that the tiger reserve
serves as international corridor for
elephants migrating between India
and Bhutan, making a it a danger
spot for train drivers.
Indian forest guards now have the
difficult task of getting the huge
animal off the tracks so that the train
line can reopen.
Sadly this fatal collision was not an
isolated incident.

actually the track repairing took a long days as all the sleepers had to be replaced..I remember we were travelling in Intercity from APDJ to SGUT & there was a 10 kmph speed restriction whole throughout BNV-BNQ it took 45 mts to travel those 6.65 km..that was the supermost crawling experience I ever had in IR...to add to the woes while returning we were stopped @ Carron for 40 mts for a crossing...we reached APDJ @ 23:25...that was the highest possible delay at that point of time...Intercity always reached APDJ @ 21:05..but now-a-days after extension to Balurghat & thanks to Elephants reaching @ 01:30 in the night has also become quite common...

(1) I find you have used Damanpur station (DPO). I do not find the station/code on indianrail.gov.in - could you plz throw some light. I'm particularly interested because this station, which was located bit north of APDJ and presumably a defunct station now, was indeed a station in pre-partition days (Bradshaw).
(3) A mild comment connected with the said blog #686866: I think such unfortunate incidents mostly occur between Rajabhatkhawa and Kalchini/Hasimara. Damanpur was a station bit north of present day APDJ, between APDJ and Rajabhatkhawa which is not the usual "elephant corridor". The usual corridor starts almost from the Hasimara/north end of Rajabhatkhawa platform till Kalchini/Hasimara. Two years back in December, when we were spending a week long winter vacation with

family at Rajabhatkhawa Tourist Lodge which is very close to Rajabhatkhawa station, many times we heard elephants 'calling' at night - people there confirmed that and mentioned that the elephants were crossing from the western side of the track to the eastern side towards Buxa/Jayanti.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
