From 1st July 2012, all rail passengers travelling Air Condition Class (3A, 2A, 1A and CC) will have to pay additional fare of 3.6% (as service tax). Those who have already booked the ac class ticket will have to pay the difference amount during the journey.

a calculator finding out what 3.6% translates into and then the change problem. This is another and a more practical reason for collecting service tax on bookings after July 1 rather than journeys after July 1.

A rise in railway fares, under the new service tax regime, was not effected from 1.7.12 due to a confusion over whether the railways had been exempted from it. It is expected that today confusion would be clear.

The Finance Ministry issued a notification exempting FC, 1AC, 2AC & 3AC (high-end passenger) fares and cargo freight from the purview of service tax till September 30, 2012.
