From 1st July 2012, all rail passengers travelling Air Condition Class (3A, 2A, 1A and CC) will have to pay additional fare of 3.6% (as service tax). Those who have already booked the ac class ticket will have to pay the difference amount during the journey.

Lets wait and see, nevertheless. When Service tax was introduced for business class travel a few years back, I remember reading about how the guys who booked earlier than the date of implementation, got away. Similarly, the increase in the service taxable component of the apartment which I had booked was wef April 1 (like July 1 for railways). If I had paid before April 1, I could have saved money. A rise in railway fares, under the new service tax regime, was not effected from 1.7.12 due to a confusion over whether the railways had been exempted from it. It is expected that today confusion would be clear.

The Finance Ministry issued a notification exempting FC, 1AC, 2AC & 3AC (high-end passenger) fares and cargo freight from the purview of service tax till September 30, 2012.
