Bankers are attached at rear end to assist the train in climbing the Ghats and also to avoid strain on couplers here in this section its Kulem to Castlerock.
Brakers are attached in the front of the train for additional braking power while descending the Ghats here it is Castlerock to Kulem.

In May 2016 I travelled from SVM to LD in VSG YPR express train was lead by KJM Alco and banked by Twin Hubli WDG4s.
Pehle toh sir Freight trains ko hi EMD bankers milte the lekin ab passenger trains ko bhi lagate hai. Hubli ke pas toh bhare pade hai WDG4s.

Strain is a pulling force and when the Loco pulls the coaches on any gradient it is exerted on the coupler. But when Banker which reamint at rear is there, it will provide pushing force from the back subsiding the pulling force and hence the Strain on copuler reduces.
