*****Technical Question about Twin Bo Bo 3-Phase Loco (i.e WAP-5)*****
Two Bo-Bo 3-Phase Speed Star is resting at BDTS, One is Non-Amul Livery the Fisrt One & the second One is in BRC's Majestic Amul Livery. (i.e BRC WAP-5 30071 & BRC WAP-5 30047)

Both WAP-5 and WAP-7 are best suited with LHB Coaches

Kindly answer the Following Technical Query : (All are Requested)
We all know WAP-7 is the best 3-Phase Passenger Loco in terms of Acceleration. Now my Query is why being the Lightest Loco (ONLY 78 Ton) WAP-5 takes more Time to accelerate in full swing while being the heaviest Loco (123 Ton) WAP-7 take least time to accelerate in Full Speed
Why is it so ?
Can anybody answer it citing the actual reason ?
Kya Jadu hai jo WAP-7 takes less time than WAP-5 to accelerate at full swing ?

No Jaadu as such. The better acceleration numbers are simply because of the higher axle load, difference in gear ratio and the control software ( Initial WAP7 locos had worse acceleration than WAP4, and many software patches were issued to improve the acceleration).
Another thing to note is that WAP7 has better acceleration only at low speeds. Beyond 60-70 kmph, WAP5 has a similar performance. Part of this can be attributed to the brute force of the P7 locomotive ( just a modified freight loco) which makes it easy to modify it for better starting Tractive effort.

But this comparison is sort of pointless. While a WAP5 is powerful enough for hauling a 26 coach ICF rake, it is designed for hauling medium length rakes ( 18 coaches is the usually quoted number). That's where it's most efficient. But a P7 is designed specifically for hauling longer rakes. So naturally it's best suited for longer rakes. If you consider each loco's performance according to what it is designed for ( P7 from 0-140kmph with long 24 coach rake and P5 for 0-160kmph with a medium length 18 coach rake) then the P5 is a more consistent loco ( Incidentally, the P5's traction motors are more powerful than the P7's).

So, the WAP5 vs WAP7 won't end, uh? Damn! This never ends :P. When I glanced at this post I thought it would be WAP5 related. But the comparison with WAP7 was not necessary here :P

Re# 1766205-30
Common misunderstandings! :P
1. There is a difference between 'acceleration' and 'acceleration reserve'. Acceleration reserve refers to the short time ratings or maximum ratings (current, voltage, torque, power, etc) which the traction motors can withstand. In short, in elocos, the TMs can be overloaded for a short period of time, which results in results in a quicker pickup. TMs have ratings like 10 min rating, 1 hour rating, continuous rating, etc.
For example, a WAP4 with 750V voltage rating across the TMs can withstand 1250A for 10 min, 1100A for 1 hour,

900A continuously
2. IRFCA's famous acceleration numbers! Old and outdated. Needs a re-check. As per my observations, the gap was around 30 seconds only (load = 24 coaches)! P7 was definitely ahead in the race, but slightly :P. WAP5 still has the second fastest acceleration :)
3 & 4. Who said P5 can't haul 24 coaches? There are many 23-24 coach trains hauled by WAP5. I've seen them myself. Neither RDSO, nor the zones which home WAP5 have put any restriction on their haulage. They're free to haul max length trains too :P. Acceleration is good on an absolute scale, better than a WAP4's - minimum requirement for a next gen passenger loco. In the video, it took less than a minute to accelerate (15-60 km/h) and decelerate up to 20 km/h again. The speed values are approximate.
