Woman Panicked After Brake-Fail Rumour; DHR Rubbishes Claim

over “rumours“ that the brakes of a toy train under the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) had failed, a tourist jumped off the moving train near Chunbhatti under the Kurseon subdivision on Monday afternoon and died on the spot. The deceased has been identified as Moli Paul (51), a resident of Kolkata.
Three other tourists also jumped off the train and received minor injuries. They were released after being treated in the Tindharia Railway Hospital.
.
The incident took place around 2.50pm on Monday when Moli jumped off the 52552 Down Jungle Safari toy train that runs between Siliguri and Ghayabari. Chunbhatti station, where the incident took place, is 32 kilometres down from Kurseong.
According to police, the deceased died on the spot after receiving severe injuries on her head. “She fell on a tin house just off the track,“ said a witness. “It seems the passengers had learnt that the brakes of the toy train had failed. In fear, some of them jumped off the train,“ a police officer said. But, police could not confirm the brake-fail claim. DHR officials, however, refuted reports of brake fail or derailment. “We have started a probe into the incident. As far as the allegation of brake fail is concerned, it is not true. If that was the reason behind the passenger's death, then how could the driver stop the train? We want to make it clear that there was neither a brake fail nor any derailment,“ said S Lahiri, the chief public relations officer of the DHR.
.
It has been learnt that Moli was accompanied by her hus band Jower Paul and brotherin-law when the accident took place. “We had come to visit Moli's brother-in-law in Siliguri on January 22. We decided to take the toy train ride on January 26 to enjoy the beauty of the Hills,“ said Jower. At the time of the accident, almost 80 passengers were there in the train. Apart from the usual joyrides on trains pulled by steam engines -from Darjeeling to Ghoom and back and the 87 km NJP to Darjeeling service -the DHR also conducts this Jungle Safari ride on a train pulled by a diesel engine.
When asked if the DHR would compensate the family of the deceased, the CPRO said: “The death is unfortunate. But, we will take a decision about the compensation only after the probe is over.“
Police sources said a case of unnatural death has been registered at the Kurseong police station on Monday.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
