History of the train:
Kaveri Express-named after the famous river "Cauvery" which passes through Mysore region and crosses at Srirangapatna, was first introduced in the late 70's-Early 80's period as a day time train between Mysore and Bangalore in the erstwhile Meter gauge(MG) era between the 2 cities. The train continued its journey even after the MG was converted to Broad gauge and followed this pattern of RSA as Kaveri-Tippu and Chamundi (Bangalore-Mysore) and opposite as Chamundi-Tippu-Kaveri.
1997-The bangalore-trichy/Madurai link Express was de-linked and Trichy portion extended to Mysore-train left Bangalore at...

In 1997 December a Daily special was introduced for winter between Bangalore and chennai. the timings of this train connected the Kaveri Express from Bangalore to Mysore. (7AM departure Bangalore-10AM Arr Mysore and 6Pm from Mysore to reach Bangalore at 9PM). in the next budget Kaveri was extended to Chennai and it lost its Seating accommodation to berths but maintained the same timings in Bangalore Mysore region as before.
The gauge conversion between Trichy and Tanjore extended Trichy Express(16231/32) to Tanjore in 1999. in 2001 Bangalore Madurai Express(16731/32) was extended to Tuticorin. The timings of 16231 was changed to reach Bangalore at 6:15 and leave at 6:30 to Mysore and was followed by Kaveri at 7AM. the Tuticorin Express was speeded up to reach Bangalore at 6:45AM and it left Bangalore to tuticorin at 9:45PM
Around 2003 16731/32 was extended to Mysore and timings up to Bangalore remained the same. The erstwhile slot of 16231/32 remaining vacant to Mysore Kaveri was allotted the timings for Bangalore-Mysore strech. Since 16732 occupied Kaveri timings on return too Kaveri was rescheduled to leave Mysore at 8PM the timings it follows even today

The Kaveri Express is named after the sick river "Cauvery" that goes through Mysore area and passes by Srirangapatna. This bad boy first came into scene in the late 70's and early 80's as a daytime ride from Mysore to Bangalore in that old Meter Gauge era. Even after the switch-up to Broad gauge, this train kept on rollin' with the names Kaveri-Tippu and Chamundi rollin’ through the cities. In '97, they split the Banglore-Trichy/Madurai link with Trichy routing to Mysore, departing Bangalore at 5 AM and hittin' Mysore at 7:45 AM. The Madurai line got to Bangalore by 8 AM.
Fast forward to December '97, they dropped a Daily Special between Bangalore and Chennai for the winter, linking up with the Kaveri Express timings. (7 AM outta Bangalore-10 AM Mysore, and 6 PM back to Bangalore by 9 PM). The next move was extending Kaveri all the way to Chennai, switching seats for bunks, but the schedule in the Bangalore-Mysore area stayed the same.
In '99, the gauge switch-up from Trichy to Tanjore got the Trichy Express rolling all the way to Tanjore. In 2001, the Bangalore-Madurai Express got lengthened to Tuticorin. The times changed a bit, with the trains moving earlier and later accordingly.
Around 2003, the Madurai Express got hooked up to Mysore, keeping the same schedule 'til Bangalore. The old 16231/32 slot to Mysore got snatched up when Kaveri got the new schedule for Bangalore-Mysore run. Since 16732 took up Kaveri slots, they rerouted Kaveri to leave Mysore at 8 PM, a routine they still stick to today.

Kaveri Express, jo mashhoor Kaveri nadi ke naam par hai, jo Mysore kshetra se guzarti hai aur Srirangapatna paar karti hai, pehli baar 70 ke ant mein ya 80 ke shuru mein Mysore aur Bangalore ke beech ek din ke train ke roop mein shuru hui thi, jab dono shehron ke beech meter gauge (MG) tha. MG broad gauge mein badalne ke baad bhi train chalti rahi aur Kaveri-Tippu aur Chamundi (Bangalore-Mysore) aur uske ulte Chamundi-Tippu-Kaveri ke roop mein RSA karti rahi.
1997 mein, Bangalore-Trichy/Madurai link express ko alag kar diya gaya aur Trichy wala hissa Mysore tak badha diya gaya – train Bangalore se subah 5 baje chali aur Mysore 7:45 baje pahunchi. Madurai wala hissa Bangalore 8 baje pahuncha.
1997 December mein, Bangalore aur Chennai ke beech winter ke liye ek daily special shuru kiya gaya. Is train ka samay Kaveri Express ke Bangalore se Mysore jane wale samay se juda tha (subah 7 baje Bangalore se chalu – 10 baje Mysore pahunch – aur shaam 6 baje Mysore se chalu – raat 9 baje Bangalore pahunch). Agale budget mein Kaveri ko Chennai tak badha diya gaya aur uski baithne ki jagah sleeper ban gayi, lekin Bangalore-Mysore kshetra mein samay pehle jaisa hi raha.
Trichy aur Tanjore ke beech gauge conversion hone se 1999 mein Trichy Express (16231/32) ko Tanjore tak badha diya gaya. 2001 mein Bangalore-Madurai Express (16731/32) ko Tuticorin tak badha diya gaya. 16231 ka samay badal kar Bangalore 6:15 baje pahunchne aur 6:30 baje Mysore ke liye chalu hone ka kar diya gaya aur uske baad Kaveri 7 baje chali. Tuticorin Express ki speed badha kar Bangalore 6:45 baje pahunchane ka kiya gaya aur yeh Bangalore se Tuticorin ke liye raat 9:45 baje chali.
2003 ke aas paas 16731/32 ko Mysore tak badha diya gaya aur Bangalore tak ka samay wahi raha. 16231/32 ki Mysore wali jagah khali hone se Kaveri ko Bangalore-Mysore ke liye woh samay de diya gaya. Kyunki 16732 Kaveri ke vapsi wale samay pe bhi thi, isliye Kaveri ka samay badal kar shaam 8 baje Mysore se chalu kar diya gaya, jo aaj bhi hai.
