The Pallava dynasty ruled northern Tamil Nadu and...
more... Andhra Pradesh with their capital at Kanchipuram. Originally, descendents of warriors from Northwest India, they settled in the Guntur region of Andhra Pradesh in the 6th century BC and dominated the Telugu and northern parts of the Tamil region until the end of the 9th century AD. The word Pallava means branch in Sanskrit, in contrast with Chola meaning new country, Pandya meaning old country and Chera meaning hill country in the Sangam Tamil lexicon. The Pallavas are considered to be later offshoot of the Cholas. Throughout their reign, they were in constant conflict with both the Chalukyas of Badami in the north, and the Tamil kingdoms of the Cholas and Pandyas in the south and were finally defeated by the Chola kings in the 9th century AD.
