The total length of the bridge is 3,059 meters. It was opened for traffic on 27 February 1900. When it was built, it was the longest bridge in India and was believed to be the second longest bridge in the world.

The 12381/12382 Poorva Express is a Superfast train belonging to Eastern Railway Zone that runs between Howrah Junction and New Delhi via Varanasi & Gaya, on a tri-weekly basis.

Here this is 12382 DN New Delhi - Howrah Poorva Express being powered by Howrah HOG WAP7 # 30503 Crossing Sone Bridge.

with the introduction of the Rajdhani Express in 1969, Non AC Coaches were being attached in this train and further its terminal was shifted from Amritsar to New Delhi.
But its popularity never ceased. Due to its high popularity, a separate service was started from New Delhi to Howrah via Patna on 1st August 1971.
Now it runs from New Delhi to Howrah via Patna for 4 days & New Delhi to Howrah via Varanasi & Gaya for 3 days in a week.
